With its certain je ne sais quoi, France's cultured air combines with its legends of kings and queens, castles and fairies to lure the sophisticated and the romantic. Its cities are characterized by stylish sidewalk cafes and medieval architecture, and its palpable history is detailed by narrow, cobblestone streets leading to countless monuments, memorials and museums. 

INLAND TOWNS AND VILLAGES

 

 

 

Quintin, Corlay and St. Nicolas-de-pelem lie just off route D790 which runs from St. Brieuc in the north, inland down to Rostrenen, near Morbihan in the South of Cotes d’Armor. It is not far to Lac de Guerledan with its beaches, water sports, safe swimming, creperies and fishing.  Also in the area is the Abbey de Bon Repos which as a Son et Luminaire in August.  Local performers re-enact the factual and legendry history of the area from Roman invasion to Revolution.  The abbey is set in a beautiful location, with weirs, salmom stairs, a former watermill, mediaeval stone bridge over the river, plus a restaurant and a fossil shop.

The nearest village to Wisteria Cottage.  There are approx 1000 inhabitants with shops, bars and restaurant.  Local facilities are also here.  Interesting attractions here are the HorseMuseum which overlooks the massive lake and weir.  In the one part you can fish for trout after obtaining a permit form the local bar.  The other half of the lake has a pedestrian route all the way round and a picnic area at one end accessible from the D767. Buy your fresh fish on a Friday morning from the market place.

This is a “petite cite de caractere” approx 10kms from wisteria.  An interesting and attractive small mediaeval town which was the centre of linen weaving in the 18th century.  Attractions include the 13th century Chateau, rebuilt at a later date, with its collections and exhibitions.  There are several annual festivals.  The Quintin lake offers fishing, canoeing and kayaking, and the Gouet stream for walks.  There are 13 monuments in the area and much more beside.

Rostrenen

Is a large town of equal distance from both cottages.   Following through it is the NantesBrestCanal, with a tow path  for country walks or cycle rides.  An old railway line is now a cycle path, leading to Gouarec and Carhaix through deep countryside and woods.  Rivers and lakes add to the attraction of the area.  There is a large bustling market for your fresh produce, small animals and various local crafts on every Tuesday.

South of Rostrenen, a place for activities i.e rock climbing and pony trekking.  Not far away is Lac de Korong, canoeing, windsurfing and pedelo hire are available on the lake. There is also a man made beach and children’s play area.  It is an excellent course fishing lake.

This is a beautiful mediaeval town with all the usual shops and facilities.  Just before the main town is the Aquatides, 700sqm of pool, with giant water slide and free Jacuzzi.  There is pool for younger children with a spouting dolphin and a water course.  Also available is a main pool for serious swimmers.  The Foret de Loudeac is close by for walks and picnics.

St Nicolas du Pelem

 This is the nearest large town to Jasmine Cottage. A quiet town with shops and restaurant, surrounded by rolling countryside.  It has amenities including a bank, hotel and a heated outdoor swimming pool. Just outside is a large Supermarket where you can buy all the things you would need for your stay.  Not far from here is the beautiful Lac de Guerledan with its water sports, three sandy beaches (swimming allowed) and eateries.
